12/22/15 UPDATE: Liza was rescued by GEPDA! If you are interested in adopting her, please contact mrotties4ever@aol.com. Pretty Pearl was adopted from the shelter! And, Kate is still looking for her forever home. You can find out more about Kate here.

There are three special girls at the San Jose shelter who need a home for the holidays. All three dogs adore people! The shelter wants to find them loving homes with their 'perfect people'.
PictureLIZA
Liza is most at risk and needs a home immediately. She is a nervous nelly and the shelter environment is much too stressful for her. Liza suffers from anxiety and is currently on medication to help calm her.

She is an intelligent 41 lb, three year old boxer/pit bull mix. Liza is eager to please, potty trained and knows basic commands. She bonds quickly to people and needs someone who can build her trust by giving her training and structure.

PicturePEARL
Pretty Pearl is a two year old exuberant 60 lb American Bulldog and a champion fence jumper. We've been told she can scale an 8' fence. Obviously Pearl will need a home where she is supervised while in the backyard and given regular exercise to burn off excess energy. She is available to adopt however the kennel environment is beginning to stress her and she needs a forever or foster home soon.

Picture
KATE
Kate, a shelter staff and volunteer favorite, is a 56 lb couch potato. Her favorite past time at the shelter was hanging out on the couch with volunteers while getting attention and posing for pictures.
She's a seven year old pit bull/boxer mix who would do best in a home with no cats and no small dogs. She can be a bit dog reactive however is currently doing well in a dog savvy foster home with other dogs. Kate is looking for her forever home and is ready to adopt.
All the girls are spayed, microchipped and up to date on vaccines and ready for their homes for the holidays! If you have questions or would like more information, email info@sjanimaladvocates.org.

7/15/15 UPDATE: Cleopatra has been rescued by Four Paws to Love. She will be scheduled for some dental work soon. If you would like to help Four Paws with the cost of her procedure, please donate here.

Picture
Cleopatra, a beautiful nine year old Maine Coon mix needs a palace immediately!

Actually any qualified, caring foster home will do; she's not really that picky about her accommodations.

Cleopatra is large, mellow girl with a mousy meow who has won the hearts of staff at the shelter. She may need some dental work that her sponsoring rescue organization will cover veterinary costs for.

If you can provide this beauty with a temporary (or permanent) throne, fill out a foster application now HERE! We only have two days to save Cleo so time is of the essence.

4/24/15 PUPDATE: Bluebell has had her surgery and is recovering in a foster home! Holly's knee has healed and she is available to adopt! More info about her here.

Picture
There are a couple of goofy goobers at the San Jose shelter who are at risk and need help!

Bluebell is just a puppy at 10 months old. She has a broken elbow that most likely will need surgical repair. She needs a foster home to get her through the healing process. Even with her pronounced limp, she's an exuberant bouncy, happy girl!

She loves people and gets along with other dogs.

Picture
4/24/15 PUPDATE: Holly's knee has healed and she is available to adopt! More info about her here.

As you can see from her photo collage, Holly is a shelter staff and volunteer favorite. She is about 7 years old and adores people. Her hobbies are snuggling on the couch, long walks and playing in the grass. She is crate trained, too!

She has a bit of a bum knee that may need surgery. She needs a foster home where she can recuperate. We hope to know more about her knee's condition soon.

Both of these lovely girls are out of time and need sponsoring rescue organizations and foster homes. The shelter is assessing whether they would be able to perform any needed surgeries in-house. We hope to have more information on this soon!

If you can help Bluebell or Holly, fill out our application here.

UPDATE: 2/17/2015 - Achilles has been rescued by The Perfect Dog and will be available to adopt soon!

Picture
Got a place for this face in your home?

Eight year old Achilles is out of time and needs somewhere to go. If you can give him a temp or permanent home, fill this out HERE.

He had a home but when his people needed to move, he was dumped at the San Jose shelter.

You would never guess from his happy photos but he has become shut down in his kennel. He trembles with fear and nervously licks his paws waiting for someone to save him.

Picture
He is 73 pounds of cattle dog mix and needs to drop a few pounds. Typical of the breed - he's not good with cats but is fine with big and small dogs. He walks well on leash and is very people oriented.

We are seeking a sponsoring rescue organization and a foster home. It's not too late to be his Valentine!

Email us if you need more information at info@sjanimaladvocates.org.

Picture
We are certain there is one adorable pup underneath that mop. Holly just needs a good bath and some grooming.

This snuggly, mellow and loving eight year old Poodle mix needs a foster home and rescue immediately.

She is at risk because she is blind due to cataracts. Dogs can live a very fulfilling life without being able to see. There are some cool tips and great advice in this article.

Help us save this deserving stray pup! She needs a sponsoring rescue organization and a loving foster home. Can you give her a temp home? Fill out our foster application here. Got questions? Email us - info@sjanimaladvocates.org.

Pittie Pair Needs Rescue!

PUPDATE: The male pup was rescued! The female was named Pupcake and after healing, she was put up for adoption at San Jose Animal Care Center. She has since been adopted!

We all know it. Unfortunately there are some truly despicable people out there. Thankfully there are also many heroes!

On November 16th a good Samaritan saw two Pit pups in distress and called Animal Control. When the Animal Services Officers arrived, they found the dogs tied to a tree by a vacuum cord. They were emaciated, flea ridden and their legs were bound.
Picture
Despite their trauma, these young pups are very friendly and love people. The tan brindle male has a mild heart murmur and is at risk of euthanasia. He needs a sponsoring rescue organization and a temporary foster home immediately. Many people and animals live long healthy lives with murmurs! The female is recovering nicely and has already gained five pounds under the shelter's care.

A loving home would help the dogs' healing - physically and mentally. If you can foster one or both dogs, please fill out our app HERE. Rescues may email the shelter at sjrescue@sanjoseca.gov. Their ID numbers are A923149 for the female and A923148 for the male. If you have questions, please email us at info@sjanimaladvocates.org.

We would like to thank Tails of a Shelter Vet for the use of photos and alerting us to this story. You can read more about the dogs on the Tails of a Shelter Vet blog HERE.

UPDATE: 10/20/2014 - The great people at Our Pack have rescued all three pups. They will available to adopt when they have healed.

Picture

Just look at these adorable playful Pittie pups! They have started medication to treat their demodectic mange but it takes time. Time and space that the shelter can not afford.

These friendly little goobers have only a day to find a sponsoring rescue organization and a foster home(s). Although it may look bad, dedomex is not contagious to humans or other pets. The pups simply need to continue treatment to rid themselves of the parasite. Medication and supplies are covered by the sponsoring rescue organization.
If you are interested in helping one or all of these puppies by providing a foster home, fill out our app here. Got questions? Email us at info@sjanimaladvocates.org. Interested rescues can contact the shelter at sjrescue@sanjoseca.gov or email us at info@sjanimaladvocates.org.

UPDATE: 9/30/14 - We have good news and sad news. Lil Chester's quality of life was so poor it warranted him being humanly euthanized. RIP Chester.

On a much happier note... Cookie and Sweetie went off to live with their new mom in Kanab, Utah!

There are three Chihuahuas at the San Jose shelter who need your help. We are seeking sponsoring rescue organizations and foster homes for these little ones.
PictureTheir favorite place - a lap
Cookie and Sweetie are a bonded pair of lap dogs and shelter staff favorites. Both girls are stressed in the noisy environment and have a case of kennel cough. Kennel cough is easily treated with some medication and time to destress.

Cookie, the tan girl is 7 years old and needs to loose a few pounds. Her mother, Sweetie is 9 years old and is more confident and outgoing.

PictureLil Chester
Chester* is a long haired Chi who is about 12 years old. This 5 pound boy was hit by a car and will need quiet cage rest to recover.

Medical costs for all of these pups would be covered by a rescue organization. If you can foster the ladies or little Chester, please fill out our application here. (*Chester is not his real name. He is a stray and his foster home can rename him.)

Time to Bust Jack Out!

6/14/2014

UPDATE: 6/16/14 - Jack will leave the shelter tomorrow and go to his fantastic foster home. Once he's kicked his cat cold, you can adopt him through St. Francis Animal Protection Society!
Picture
Did you see the movie "Groundhog Day" where Bill Murray relives the same experience over and over again with no end in sight? We pull for him to be able to break out of his seemingly endless and hopeless situation.

Seven year old Jack knows the plot well. He is living his own "Groundhog Day" at the San Jose shelter. He's a mellow, slightly shy boy who has been at the shelter since mid-March. He can't seem to shake his kitty cold and it keeps...coming...back.

What Jack needs most is to get out of the shelter environment. A week or two to destress in a loving quiet home is almost a surefire cure to the common cat cold.

Picture
Once he has kicked his cold, he would be fine with other laid back kitties and has spent time in the shelter's community cat room. He doesn't care for the crazy in your face type of felines though.

Can you break Jack out of his recurring groundhog funk by giving him a temporary or permanent home? Fill out our application here. Got questions? Email us at info@sjanimaladvocates.org.

Kayla's callin' for you!

Picture
UPDATE: 6/14/14 - Kayla continues to thrive in her foster home and now has a spiffy set of pink wheels to tool around with.

She and her foster family stopped by the St. Francis yard sale fund raiser today.

Obviously she was a big fan of the succulents.

UPDATE: 6/6/14 - Kayla says goodbye to the shelter and will sleep in a wonderful foster home tonight. Once she has had a chance to settle in and her spinal condition has been assessed, she will be available to adopt through St. Francis Animal Protection Society!
Picture
This 10 year old adorable little girl is Kayla. She was surrendered to the San Jose shelter by her owner and is at risk. We are searching for an extra special foster home for her.

Kayla has a spinal injury and while she is paralyzed in her rear legs, it doesn't slow her down for one second! She can motor around and loves to play with her squeaky toy. She is very affectionate and quickly bonds with people. And, she gets along with other dogs!

It is uncertain whether she will get the use of her legs back and she may need to use a doggy wheelchair for the rest of her life. At this time she is also incontinent and will require diapers. This may or may not be a permanent condition. Her sponsoring rescue organization will cover the cost of a medical evaluation.

Picture
If you can help us save this happy active pup and give her the special care she needs, fill out our application here.

Have questions? Email us at info@sjanimaladvocates.org.

Watch her video and see just how full of life Kayla is!
